The “Old Avery
House” was located on Barringer Road, high on a hill overlooking
the Mohawk Valley. It is believed that John Stanton Avery and
his wife Apphia Remington came from Suffield, Connecticut and
built the house in 1819. Here the couple raised their family of
eight children.
It was called Avery’s Tavern. Stage coaches used to frequent
it often, stopping for food, warmth and overnight lodging. The
farm remained in the Avery name until 1928 when the Ilion Fish
and Game Club purchased 195 acres of it to be used as a game refuge.
In 1932, the Avery Farm was purchased for $3,500.
The dwelling was destroyed by fire in1934.
